Friday nights don't come much better that this. Club Mexicana has been running a pop up night at The Hornbeam in Walthamstow since February and they're now on their final week week of the current run. After last year's taco trip and then the Supper Club Mexicana with Adam Rawson, I couldn't wait to give this new guise of Club Mexicana a go- especially if it means margaritas and tequilas, right?
Tsouni from @yesitsallvegan and I managed to book a table for 9pm so the place was already rammed when we got there- and so great to overhear a few conversations when people had no idea the food was even vegan- they were just enjoying the plates themselves. That's definitely what I love about the food at Club Mexicana- it's not a vegan version of a favourite- all the dishes stand up by themselves, no concessions required.
The novelty of holding an entire menu from which you can eat ANYTHING certainly won't be wearing off any time soon in London, so it took a long time to decide between sloppy joes, chimichangas and burritos. We started with cornbread and loaded nachos, and then Tsouni went for a Sloppy José while I couldn't not try my first IRL chimichanga. It was all delicious, and I'll regret not finishing the very last few bites of my chimi for a good week.
We ended up being the last people in the cafe and finally got to speak to Meriel and Lois, the two awesome women behind the Club Mexicana brand. When you spend so much time talking to people online, through Twitter or Instagram or by email, it's easy to forget how great it is to talk about veganism in real life, get over excited and shout, or just be totally surprised to hear that someone else holds exactly the same opinion as you do. We stayed until midnight, got the worst Uber driver home of all time, and 100 per cent regretted not being able to eat another bite. Club Mexicana will be working their magic on The Hornbeam for one more week- and it's probably best to book ahead via email [firstname.lastname@example.org].
Friday night, we out.
