Here are a few photos from my most recent recipe for The Debrief: beer battered to-fish bites with sweet potato fries, homemade mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce, which you can read in full here.
Now, faux fish freaks me out a little too, but after trying one of the beer battered tofu fish tacos at Club Mexicana one Saturday night mid-shift, I realised I might have been wrong with a blanket ban. At the end of the night, Meriel had some fish left over, so gave me some to take home and try to cook with. Thinking that any experiment with English cuisine should involve someone who still finds it a bit of a novelty, I invited over the Belgian in my life, Amelie, and made a chip shop dinner from scratch.
If you can find fake fish in an Asian supermarket, you can skip out the nori stage of this recipe and go straight to deep-frying. For the Debrief recipe I didn't want to use such a specific ingredient I know not many people in the UK can get their hands on, so instead I went with pieces of drained, firm tofu. The mushy peas have also caused a little controversy over on the Vegan Association FB Page, apparently marrowfat peas are the only way to go in some circles, but TBH I just fancied making something a bit more decadent for a Sunday night dinner. By all means go with the regular tinned chaps instead if you'd prefer (that green tho).
