I've covered Barcelona for vegans, and self-catering for vegans, and general vegan-when-en route vibes but Primavera this year was stand-out ace for vegans. I ate two dinners every night and treated the vegan stand like it was a legit part of the actual festival line-up, there was so much I was determined to get through.
You may begin your days at Primavera thinking you'll have all the hours before the bands start to explore the city, take in the sights, you know, really get to grips with the area. Hah. Yeah, sure. Day two rolls around and 1pm feels like a mighty tough time to be drinking your first coffee, let alone stepping outside. So I snuck in some other vegan food trips- I didn't do as many as I'd intended but there's always next year...
The main thing was that bar the forever terrible airport food at either end of the flight, being vegan in Barca was phenom. I ran up to that big VEGAN FOOD sign at the festival with as much gusto as I did with any other love of my life I saw there. Where did you get to pal? Let's eat dinner twice a night, every night together for the next three days. Sure thing. Just stood here talking to a sign mate, what's your problem?
In any case, here's some of the food I ate or made or loved and me looking chuffed doing so.
Other places we visited (/ or didn't) that were awesome:
✮ MAOZ. "Ready for a falafel experience?" Well, apparently, YES. My BFF Guj tipped me off about Maoz- jeez, I thought- if anyone's tried enough falafel in their time, it's me. I was WRONG. I HADN'T. I MAYBE HAVE NOW. Maoz is the Room of Requirement for the day-after-festival-eating: it's cheap, it's not fancy and it's got an all-you-can-eat vibe. Check out the photo at the top of the post for some visual hints. You're given a pitta with falafel and hummus, and then you just fill it up with any extra salad you'd like/can squash in. I think all but one filling- the coleslaw- was vegan, and it all came to €7.50 with a coke and chips. And the chips are proper chips, not fries. Chip shop chips. Everyone from the UK knows what I'm talking about here.
✿ GOPAL. A vegan deli AND shop. We ran out of time to find this place, but I really wanted to try a vegan doughnut there.
✻ CAT BAR. This one is a definitely for next time, but as it opens at 6.30pm we couldn't ever get there without missing a) lots of bands b) a flight. Next time, you will be mine. Thank you Kelly-Marie for the tip :) EDIT: JUST SEEN THEY RAN A DAYTIME OFFER ON BEER AND BURGERS AND WERE OPEN DURING THE DAY FOR PRIMAVERA WEEK. AHHHHHHHHHHH
✩ Primavera was an emotional time for us all and if you didn't cry during Patti Smith you should have been crying at the beautiful wonder of 3am dhal. That's all I got.
